Stone Fox, written by John Reynolds Gardiner with illustrations by Marcia Sewall is good chapter book. This is a story about a boy whose Grandfather becomes very sick and may lose his farm if he doesn’t pay the taxes he owes. His Grandson, Willie displays an unconditional love for his Grandfather, and because of this Willie will do anything to see his Grandfather become healthy again. Against all odds and despite what all the locals say, Willie and his best friend (dog) Searchlight decide they will race against the unbeaten Native American, Stone Fox along with other competitors in the annual dog sledding contest in order to win money, save his farm, and restore health to his sick Grandfather. Willie displays the great human spirit throughout this book. When life throws adversity at you, Willie takes the reigns head on and trudges forward. No matter what the outcome, Willie treats everyone with the utmost respect, and by the end of the book, he earns everyone’s respect too. I recommend this book for children who are getting into chapter books.
