This story always makes me cry. It only loses a star because it seems so unrealistic in the end, almost like a sort of fairy tale. All the bad guys learn their lesson, Nettie and the children come home, and they all live happily ever after. I don't necessarily know that I'd want it to end differently, but it still just seems too easy.
Also, I read the book after I'd seen the movie, and I was moved more by the film. Whoopi and Oprah's performances were spectacular, and I think it helped me to feel more of the emotion when I saw it on their faces.

Sarah: I love this book. I read it in high school when it first came out--we were given several books from which to choose, and I got through several chapters when I was just "checking it out" and figured it was the one for me. Of course, there was a lot I didn't understand nor appreciate. I read it again for a class in college, then at least one more time. I thought the movie was fairly faithful and wonderful in it's own right. One of the first books I ever read in the style of a journal--interesting to compare it to Dracula, eh? And Frankenstein, right?

I haven't read Dracula or Frankenstein, Robbie.I saw The Color Purple: The Musical last night. Eh. It was okay. Too much of the story had to be condensed and so it lost the emotion. I just didn't care. Also our Celie was an understudy and I thought she was terrible.
I really can't imagine it as a musical, but that's what I thought about Wicked, too. I suppose this one wasn't too upbeat though.
