really liked it
bookshelves: read-in-2010

I have to say that I am a little unsure what to make of this book. I bought it at an Elementary School book fair for my fourth grade library because it looked interesting. After reading it, I'm not sure I'm going to put it in that library. Don't get me wrong, I love a good alternate version of a fairy tale and this one isn't a bad one, at all. However, there are some adult overtones, or at least teen-reader overtones to this one that I'm not willing to tackle parents over.

The one character that stands out the most is one that is in the dungeon, ready to be executed. He's set to guard Ella because he's a rather threatening character and you find out later he's going to be executed because he raped a girl. And he keeps asking to be allowed in Ella's cell. Again, I'm not bashing it, but I don't think I want my daughter reading that at 10, so I think I'll leave it off the shelf for my fourth graders.
