Needful Things
by Stephen King
by Stephen King
My first thought when reading this book was that it's "cheating" to trick people into selling their souls (sort of) by making them think that some piece of trash is really their heart's desire. But when you get right down to it, people's worst actions come from desiring or feeling something, and believing that it is now THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE UNIVERSE. And then using that to justify anything. What they originally wanted or felt never ends up being worth the pain they cause for it, so why not skip a step?
Actually, my first thought upon finishing the book was "Wow, that ending sucked." Part of it did, anyway. You'll know the part I'm talking about when you read it; silly and over the top. That's the usual problem with his books; he obviously enjoys telling the story so much that he generally can't come up with a good way to STOP the story. It's a sign of Stephen King's talent that the rest of the book makes up for it, since it's all what King does best: take a town of ordinary citizens, introduce a supernatural element, and watch everyone lose their minds.
