I really like this series from Jacqueline Cary. It's really a sword and travel fantasy in an alternative history. What sets it apart are not the action-adventure sequences, or the dirty parts (of which there are many), but the ruminations on faith, and identity, and mystery.

Jenna VW I love Jacqueline Carey and her Kushiel series. I've fallen behind in reading, but her writing is so gripping and a nice mix of fantasy and adventure with romance, steamy sex, and alternative history -- as well as faith (as you mention). I really connect with the characters and, once I start, I can barely manage to put the books down. That's led to many sleepless nights :)
