I think I enjoyed this one even more than The Sky People (first in the series.)
The literal translation of the Martians' speech was occasionally laugh-out-loud funny.
(A favorite quote:
[mercenary captain to ship crew:] "I don't care what you think about the Terrans as long as you fear me as you do personal extinction."
[crew, in chorus:] "We do fear you, even to the relaxation of sphincters!"
I found myself admiring the highly pragmatic, straightforward, and rarely dishonest Martian culture.
