I wanted to like this book more than I did. The book is about a female painter, Sofonisba, who briefly studies under Michelangelo and later becomes part of the Spanish court as a lady-in-waiting. I just kept thinking about the movie Ever After with Drew Barrymore in which she meets Da Vinci (he's mentioned in this book) and stives to be independent and a strong female character thought it's a silly chick movie. It's a time where women are not expected to be anything but married and mothers and aspiring to a man's profession of artist is unheard of. Sofonisba really lived and really was a painter and while I love historical fiction I found the characters and writing a bit flat. I would however, like to read more about Sofonisba and may look up and try to a biography about her.
