You know an author has created realistic characters when they by turns frustrate, entertain, annoy, and surprise you. Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew hook up the night after their graduation in Edinborough and an entertaining chapter of awkwardness and attraction ensues--all taking place on July 15th, 1988.

As the novel continues, we see glimpses of Emma and Dexter every year on July 15th (cue Billy Bragg's song about St. Swithin's day). Sometimes they are in the same place; sometimes they are on different continents. Though they are often involved with other people, they are still connected--by a messy mix of friendship and chemistry. This novel plays out in some ways you might guess and in other ways you might not, but perhaps because I'm about the same age as Dex and Em, this story evoked a lot of nostalgia, some out-and-out belly laughs, and a few tears.
