This was a very neat story. Two brothers struggle to stay together after their parents die and their malicious aunt and uncle strive to only adopt the younger brother and send the older one to an orphanage. They meet up with a gang of other orphans who have taken up residence in an abandoned theater. Their leader is The Thief Lord, who turns out to be living a bit of a double life. Throw in a good-hearted inspector and a mystical legend, and you have a very original tale. The ending was a little deus ex mechina for my taste (actually, I thought the recent movie based on this book was even better), but The Thief Lord is an entertaining tale.
