To the Last Man by Jeff Shaara

I'd have enjoyed this book more if it had been written in another style. When I listened to The Killer Angels on CD, the quirks drove me nuts. I had no idea that Shaara's son aped his dad's style so completely until I started reading this book. It was excruciating. Dry as dirt. Because every line read like it was following a stylistic formula, I didn't get much sense of the historical characters, especially von Richthofen - who was the reason I picked the book up in the first place. I'll definitely be giving Shaara's other books a pass, even though he writes about time periods I enjoy.

Kerrie I haven't read this one, but his style definitely takes some getting used to. I only got through his Civil War books because I loved the time period so much and he made Stonewall such a huge character. I tried listening to his first Revolutionary War book and could not follow it - the stilted style kept losing me, although the narrator was doing his best.

Karla (Mossy Love Grotto) Yeah, some styles just grate and his is one of them. It wouldn't kill him to use "and" once in a friggin' while. I've never seen so many damn commas in my life.
