Farah is only 7 when she steps on a land mine on her way to school in Kabul, Afghanistan. So begins her story of 10 years recovering from her injury in a German hospital, adjusting to a prothesis and then getting reaccustomed to Afghanistan. Her family is destroyed by the wars, leaving only her sick mother who cannot care for her. This is the true story of one refugee family, with both their hardships and triumphs, as they make new lives for themselves in America. Though not as exciting or as compellingly told as books like "The Breadwinner" or "The Bookseller of Kabul", it may appeal to a young audience because of its simple language and its young subject.
