Peake manages to be both epical and miniscule in this Dickensian, medieval fantastic (not fantasy; there was no magic, though a healthy dose of gothicism). Though at times his elaborate descriptions drove me to skim, the underlying story of intrigue, power and psychology kept me entertained through the 1000 odd pages. The final volume, however, (which I've since learned was published posthumously and unpolished by Peake) I did not finish. It was simply too weird and divergent from the tone, style and plot of the earlier books.

I was fascinated by the character of Steerpike who was, for me, so intriguing at the series' opening and so revolting by the end. Great characterization, that.
