The Inheritance of Loss

I'm not going to say that this novel is bad
(Chorus of GR friends : Say it, go on, you know you want to...)
but it was pretty ghastly for me. It was strangled to death by a style you could describe as inane wittering, a crew of characters all of which are loveably eccentric and a plot that Ms Desai believes will take care of itself as the inane wittering puthers all over the loveable eccentrics.
So, to sum up
BAH

yes, that's right. Ms Desai has bags of talent but she has been led up the garden path of Indobritish cutesiness like some others we have mentioned. Let her write an Indobritish zombie story involving people trafficking and the successful cloning of Osama Bin Laden and I'll read it with pleasure.
Yes, that's about right, though I gave it another star because style goes a long way with me, and this book has quite a bit of it. Not much more than that though, unfortunately.
This has been on my shelf for ages. I've so far avoided making eye contact with it. This may now continue for a bit longer based on your review!
it's clear some people have a taste for wittering, though, look at the success of A Suitable Boy, a whole lot of witter there
