** spoiler alert ** Horror and fantasy are two of my favorite genres, so I had thought I would love this book. Maybe my expectations were too high ... I am sorry to report that all but one of these fire stories left me cold. For the most part, I found that the characters overcame their challenges far too easily. Hellhound had my heart pounding for awhile, but I was disappointed at the confrontation in the graveyard. In Phoenix, the earl was too gracious to be believable, I stumbled over Dave's dialect, and I didn't know enough about Ellie. Fireworm turned me off when I decided that Blind Bear must be Tandin's aunt. In Salamander Man, Aunt Ellila and Tib were both too wishy-washy. The last story in the book, however, glowed like a hot ember for me! I loved First Flight because I really connected to Ern and Sippy. Interestingly, it was the least fiery tale in the collection.
