bookshelves: history, science, biography
Read from June 27 to July 24, 2010

This is primarily a biography of John Harrison who crafted the first really accurate clocks. It is more than that though. Dava Sobel explains the importance of and the difficulty in measuring longitude. (To sail from one place to another when out of sight of land requires pinpointing your spot on the earth. This was very difficult before the creation of an accurate clock.) There are several versions of this book. Be sure to get the illustrated version which includes photos, artwork, maps, journal pages and engineering drawings that add a great deal to understanding and appreciation of the text.
