Someone to Watch Over Me (Bow Street Runners, #1)
by Lisa Kleypas (Goodreads Author)

3.5 stars
I liked this book, but the plot needed a deft hand to pull it off. Lisa Kleypas did in fact pull it off, but not to my satisfaction. It was good, it kept me reading, but I don't really think I enjoyed the hero of this book for at least 75% of the book. I did come to like him, but with all the descriptions of him as being large, hulking, a lummox, a thick pelt of fur (chest hair), having large hands, I just pictured him as Robert, the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond. I couldn't help myself! He came to mind no matter how I tried to give the hero those beautiful green eyes, or the gorgeous abs of steel...I got Robert every time.
The prostitute storyline was very bold, especially with the revenge plot thrown in-that was my dislike for the hero, the vengeance he wanted. And even though he fell in love with Vivien before he knew the truth, I still had the same doubts Vivien (view spoiler) had. I feel Lisa Kleypas did a good job on the plot, but I felt that the actual murderer came out of left field. Well, the man who hired the murderer did. We could all see the actual murderer from a mile a way.
Anyways, I enjoyed it, but felt at some point a bit more remorse on Grant's part would have helped me, and a bit more fire and anger from the heroine would have helped me with her.

Nice review, hon :)Just so you know, you're spoiler tag is messed up. I just wanted to let you know so you could fix it :)
Juliana wrote: "This was one of my early romance (and Kleypas) reads, so have a soft spot for it. Was also bothered by the revenge aspect and did wish the heroine was a little more of a spitfire [spoilers removed]..."Not yet, I haven't read them. I read the Wallflowers and I'm also reading the Hathaways. I want to finish the other 2 bow street runners, especially for his boss :)
Brad Garret is who I pictured...
No prob.Yeah, right? I didn't want to make you go into it with a bad outlook, but I just had to warn you, you know? Because then it would have sucked even more if we hadn't said anything, LOL.
LOL! I totally see what you mean about picturing Brad Garret! LOL!
nah I actually liked the book right off the bat, it was later as I got to know the hero, that I didn't like it.and seriously! I couldn't help myself, it just, it was him! lol
Okay, good. I liked the plotline, but I felt like the characters lacked that Kleypas charisma and they didn't take the plot where it should have gone.LOL! I seriously hate when authors describe men as having fur pelts. It's so gross! LOL
"I just pictured him as Robert, the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond."Pfft. :D
Don't you hate when that happens though? My most memorable one was Quinn from Sookie's books. I can't get Steve Wilkos out of my head, no matter how many pictures of hot bald guys people show me.
LOL! The most recent one for me was when I read The Chase. The whole time I was reading, I kept picturing Evan from Royal Pains for Evan in the book!
but with all the descriptions of him as being large, hulking, a lummox, a thick pelt of fur (chest hair), having large hands, I just pictured him as Robert, the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond. Ahaha! Best visual screw-up description ever! :D
Great review Laurie, I definitely agree on that last part about the characters.
LOLOLOLOLOL! Okay, I see how that could be disturbing then. I pictured more of a Gerard Butler - when he's in his "300" beefier role and minus 10 years (not that he doesn't still look great now!) ...

I know Book 3 has the highest ratings and it is super great, but I really, really enjoyed Book 2 with Sir Ross. He's such an unusual hero, which is one of the things I loved. Both are really good though - very satisfying reads IMO.
oh Gerard, *swoon*He is my dream man. I wish I could have changed Grant into that hunka burning Scotsman, but unfortunately the first image that stuck with me wasn't as yummy as Gerard Butler.
I'm really looking forward to Ross' book- I've heard great things about it :)

Lmaoooo I love this discussion. And, oooh Gerry, thanks Juliana, love him. :pInitally, it was a good book for me. On my 2nd reading, I liked it a bit more. Grant was so good in the end ... well, most of the times I don't find faults with LK heroes so, it was good. My personal fav is #2 of this series (Sir Ross, he's hellooo hot!). Nice review though, hopefully I won't picture Brad Garret when I read the book again (and I will no doubt!). :p

Laura the Highland Hussy wrote: "Lol! Oh no! I hope I haven't ruined Grant for you!! Picture Gerry-he's so handsome!"Fingers crossed Laura. It's a convenience actually, any Scot or green-eyed hero (except Derek, he's just not Gerry IMO), Gerry is the best choice. lolz :p
Ohhhhh Gerryyyy! Laura, you just made my day. Naughty thoughts indeed! Just look at him as Atilla. :p
Laurie, you are a goddess. Although, I am slightly disturbed by the pictures of Gerard Butler with long hair. LOL
I read a hero in kilt with long hair (better if he has dark hair-green eyes) and I can only think of Gerry as Atilla. Maybe I'll post some pics from my Gerry collection! :D

Ok more Gerry, couldn't help it. Enjoy girls! :)

This is the sweetest, Gerry with his mom. :)

And, in a kilt no less! ;)
I look at all sort of things when it comes to Gerry, Lisa but his eyes do rank #1. Can't think of a better pair of green eyes, set in such a face too! :)
look at him all dressed up...I just want to kidnap him into a dark place and do naughty durrrty things to him
I'm just about to read this and I had to laugh about the Robert from Everybody Loves Raymond comment. Now I won't be able to stop picturing him either! Thanks a lot! Heeheehee, seriously though- that's hysterical.

But, seriously, I couldn't picture anyone else! and I tried! lol
are you reading it now? what do you think?

Thanks a lot! Heeheehee, serio..."Hey- I did snicker inappropriately in the beginning at "Robert/Grant", but I found it helpful to picture him as a werewolf instead of just hairy giant Robert. Obviously I have been reading a lot of paranormal romance in order for that to be the better choice- I turned regular HR into PNR.
HelloI just wanted to tell you that you are not alone in your characterization. I have this issue where if an author says a character has even one unappealing feature I blow it way out of proportion. I remember one time the author innocently said that a hero's nose was slightly larger than average and suddenly all I could picture was nose nose and more nose, he went from being a greek god to tucan sam, and so I feel you on this and thank you for a boss bangin' visual, Everybody Loves Raymond, that had me slightly histerical for an imbarrassingly long few seconds.
Made my day ^_^

Hi! Glad I could make you smile :)
I had one book where I thought the hero's name was Angus...it took me almost 40 pages to realize his name was Argus. lol of course in my head he was Angus the rest of the book-funny how our minds grab onto something and won't let it go
LOL @ "nose nose and more nose!"

Have you read the other two books in the Bow Street Runners series yet?
