3.5 stars, really. This book is pretty all right, and is most interesting as a modern revival of the Gothic genre, mixed in with modern psychiatric ideas. The plot and characters are pretty standard -- the neglected housewife, the dangerous but alluring outsider, the nebbish cuckolded husband, the innocent child caught in the mix -- but McGrath writes them well, and the novel is never a chore to get through. I wasn't that keen on the ending -- it relies too much on the mysterious narrator who is just never defined well enough to be believable -- but all in all Asylum is a solid novel, if not particularly stunning.
