I put off reading this book for ages--my aunt left me her airplane copy after a visit--because I was sure it couldn't be as good as I kept hearing.

But it was! This book is delightful. Powell is an incredibly funny writer--it is no nice to read someone funny who isn't trying too hard.

Though nothing anyone can say will convince me that kidneys might be good.

Lisa Did you see the movie? I thought it was delightful - not deep and amusing without being stupid. That's pretty rare these days.

Dree I haven't seen it yet, but will get it from Netflix after I finish the book. I am surprised how much I like the book!

Eve I liked the book & the movie - glad I read the book first though ... I have not heard great things though about her second book ...

Dree My copy had an excerpt from the new book. I prefer to read about vegetables and butter.

Eve my thoughts too ... have you read The Gastronomy of Marriage? Just finished it and really liked it ...

Dree I haven't...I have like 50 food books on my to-read list, I think!

message 7: by Eve (new) - rated it 4 stars

Eve I keep adding more food books too ... and I have others not on the list sitting on a shelf ... now if only reading all the books would translate into my trying new recipes/improvising more...

Dree I have been improvising--my oven is broken. Jenn-Air sucks.

Eve that totally sucks ... does the stovetop still work or are you cooking everything via camping stove?

message 10: by Dree (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dree stovetop and broiler both work--just not the oven itself. yes, it's a range. have call into appliance guy--because, of course, it's almost 6 and the warranty ran out at 5. convection fan broke right after that warranty ran out. nice.

message 11: by Eve (new) - rated it 4 stars

Eve at least some of the parts are still working ... nice to have things timed to break post-warranty ... I hope the appliance guy shows up soon!
