Kate Klein is a displaced suburban mom of three who misses her former life in New York where she used her brain and didn't feel completely inadequate compared with the playground supermoms she associates with (none of whom she'd actually call a true friend). When one of the ubermommies turns up dead, Kate can't resist the lure of trying to solve the crime, which causes her path to cross with a former boyfriend -- the one that got away.
Part who done it, part a commentary on married life with children in the suburbs, this book seemed like it should have a lot going for it. Unfortunately, Jennifer Weiner bit off more than she could chew and didn't do justice to either theme. While the murder mystery is resolved, the problem of an unsatisfied life as a stay-at-home mom in the lonely suburbs with a husband who is never there versus the tug of a past love is never fully treated or resolved, which left me frustrated. I identified with the main character who doubted herself as a mother and lived in the shadow of those seemingly perfect mothers, with their trendy clothes, beautiful homes, and perfect children, but I wanted more of that and I didn't get it. Overall the book was a fast easy read, but it left me with more questions than answers.
