I wish I had found this more engaging. The three central characters -- a guy who's noble to the point of being ridiculous, his naive wife, and his scheming self-centered friend form a somewhat tortured love triangle. All three characters are more symbols of various philosophies than they are people, and either the novel or the translation are a little stiff. The ending is powerful, I just would have liked to enjoy getting there.
