Spring Awakening
by Frank Wedekind, Jonathan Franzen
by Frank Wedekind, Jonathan Franzen
I wish I'd been to the Broadway production of it, though what the translator of this edition says is true -- perhaps the modern version is much too concerned with leaving out the effect society, mainstream media, etc. have on young people. Great introduction, btw. But anyhow, I appreciated the play for being so racy at the time of publication. I love that Wedekind was hilarious throughout -- especially in the scene with the professors. What I'd heard from my roommate about the Broadway production rung true when I was reading this: these young people are tragically set in a society that treats sex as too much of a taboo. I think I'd like to discuss the play with someone in order to give it a higher rating: I didn't feel...engrossed...with the characters. ...Who was the atheist, again?
