Parker continues to write interesting fantasy stories with a tragic flavor. This story follows the head of a banking family who becomes first citizen in a republic that closely resembles Rome. Suffice it to say that like most Parker novels, the protagonist goes through life trying to do what is right, or at least what is best for him and his country, but doing so often results in the type of collateral damage usually reserved for Greek tragedies.

I enjoyed the story thoroughly and recommend it to those looking for a good read that doesn't always end in a ...happily ever after.
