Really two and a half stars. Reminiscent in theme and setting of The Invention of Everything Else (Tesla clearly has inspired a lot of people!) and I liked (disliked) it about as much. The writing is lovely but not involving in its semi-omniscient present tense "past", the plot is sort of vague and I'm still not sure what the door has to do with it or how it got there in the first place, the love story is not particularly convincing, and the twist, if that's what it is, is perfectly obvious from the beginning. But I liked the way the supporting characters were drawn, particularly the historical JP Morgan and Edison, and the bits of information about the history of NYC and its subway system are fascinating.
