This book reads like a myth of Chinese folklore. Has a child-like simplicity to it but with murder and seduction. (Hmm, I guess a lot of fables and folklore have murder and seduction). Ah well.

I liked the book but was not blown away. It was an enjoyable read with a somewhat predictable ending. Some of the adventures were wonderful and Master Li is a thoroughly engaging character (even with his one small flaw).

There is room to reflect and some depth to the story but all and all what I would call a good summer read. One where you don't have to pay close attention but can have a fun romp with interesting characters in a foreign land.

It won an award for fantasy but if I had not been told that, I probably would not have categorized it as fantasy, although I can understand why. Sometimes fantasy and magical realism are blurred and I would say that is the case in this book.
