My brother's girlfriend loaned me this, which she had read as part of her Young Adult Literature class last semester.

It's the story of Mattie Cook, who is living in Philadelphia with her widowed mother and grandfather, who own and run a coffeehouse. A typical teenager, she tries to avoid doing her chores while dreaming of a better life. Mattie, her mother and her grandfather become separated, and all deal with the horror and panic that the epidemic spreads.

The story is very well-written in my mind, and shows Mattie's growth and development as she deals with her life turning topsy-turvy. There is an appendix at the end that discusses the real-life events that the story is built around.

The recommended age range is 10+, but I feel it is a compelling read for adults as well. Recommen...more
