A misnomer! It may have been the 23rd one written but it tells the story of how Brother Cadfael came to be in the monastic order in the first place and includes two other short stories that can be read in one sitting each. Give this a try and if you find it interesting, you will love the other books. It's not really about ancient history and monks: It's really about human nature and a good-humored look at men (and women). Ellis Peters throws in her usual twists and surprises at the end and it's hard to stop yourself from going out to find another one of her books to read right away. An excellent series of books to share with someone else, on tape or straight out of the book.
