  rating: 5 of 5 stars<br/>I've had a few people tell me I had to read this book over the years, but I think it was William that said it and it stuck. I've no money right now, so I went to Borders the other day by my Mom's house to look at tattoo magazines and scoff at the poetry in the New Yorker in the cafe section of the store. Having recently looked all over the Bookmans in Flagstaff, AZ for a copy of Jesus' Son, and not having found it, I was more determined than ever to score and read this book. Well, anyway, as I was walking around with my tattoo magazines and the New Yorker on the outside, just to throw everyone off who may or may not have been judging me, I stopped by the Johnson Section to look at Tree of Smoke and to feel its pages and see how much it'd cost to own. So it was that I scooped up these stories. Taking them over to the cafe (where I feel bad not ordering anything--eventhough there's two good reasons to abstain) I thumbed the New Yorker and found a new Frank Bidart poem that was light for him, but, obviously, heavy for the NYr, which was a delight. Then I looked at a tattoo rag with Kat von D on the cvr. I'm obsessed with the sleeve on her left arm, especially the eye on the top of her hand, so I looked for a good picture of that, but, obviously, all her pictures were just Maxim-cum-tattoos shots. I decided I'd better get out of there, so I took the price tag off Jesus' Son, leafed through it to check for magnets, and walked out the front door with it in my hand. I finished it the next day, and it slayed me.
