While critics treat this more as a historical romance, and while there may be more than one lapse in objectivity, it's a captivating look into the character, power, and political influence that Madame de Pompadour wielded. Mitford's attention to detail in the everyday life at Versailles is the best sort of staycation for city-bound readers...
