This is my first book by this author. I've heard many good things, and the book I originally intended on reading first was Barefoot. My library didn't have the copy at the moment, so I started with this one instead.

At first, the book seems to be about an affair that the main character Claire is having. This affair is introduced early on, so this is not a spoiler. She's a wife, a mother, an artist and frankly she's bored. As the plot moves along, I found it to be less about the affair in particular and more about Claire finding herself. Not that I approve of having an affair, and I think Claire and Lock were being unfair to their spouses, but this wasn't really the point of the story. She is trying to balance all the different aspects of her life, and be happy with herself. I found Claire to be a tad bit annoying in actuality. She was very guilt ridden over things that were obviously not her fault, and she was a little too "good" for me to believe it. This affair is the first thing that she's done that can be considered bad.

Lock was an interesting man to have the affair with since he was described as not being all that attractive. In fact he was bald, a little pudgy and hairy. While her husband Jason was much leaner, and had a six-pack. I think this just goes to show it wasn't really about the affair, but Claire needing to move beyond just being a mother, or a wife.

I will definitely read other books by this author.
