Inspired by Shari Benstock's Women of the Left Bank and Andrea Weiss's Paris Was a Woman, and not a little in love with Barnes, I decided to re-visit this "modernist classic," as the work has become retroactively known (Weiss tells us that Barnes' friend Emily Coleman had to practically twist T.S. Eliot's arm to accept Barnes' ms., and his preface retains his tone of reservation and his almost admirable attempt to withhold moral judgment on Nora, Robin, and their world of freaks, paraphrasing Eliot here).
