I'm not giving this novella 3 stars because it wasn't dependably entertaining. It was. Orson Scott Card almost never fails to give me a story that involves me and paints colorful and realistic images in my mind. So don't get the impression I was disappointed by the story. I wasn't at all. However, I'm comparing Card's work here with work he has done previously and it's not quite on the same level. The elements of personal risk aren't as great, and the ending is just a little too neat, the resolution is just a tad too contrived (count on Ender to swoop in at a crucial moment and fix everything). Yes, there is some character development in the story. It wouldn't have been a Card story if there weren't. But about 20 pages into it the direction of that growth became a certainty and devoid of Card's unpredictable story-lines.
