London- 1750- Agnes Meadows has fallen on some bad luck. Her husband has died and she now must place her son at a boarding school and find work. She lucks into a well-to-do family of silversmith's and becomes their cook.

Not one to participate in idle gossip, she keeps to herself and tries not to meddle in the other servants' business. But when there is a murder in the house on the same evening that one of the maids disappears, Agnes finds herself being thrust into the investigation. And she finds she is quite good at good at it.

This was a very enjoyable read. Wonderful attention to detail and the murder mystery was very plausible.
