One of my all-time favorite books, ever. I've read and re-read this so many times. I still think Rice has created one of the most dynamic and interesting fictional characters in modern literature with this book, though she pretty much imploded on her own self-importance and ruined him later in the series. I think part of the brilliance of The Vampire Lestat is the way it completely makes one re-think the events of Interview with the Vampire. She doesn't really change any of what happened, yet the understanding of Lestat's backstory suddenly makes him not only understandable, but adored, rather than the scoffed-upon and detested villain from Interview. Even more impressive is that Rice manages to make not only one utterly fantastic character, but two: Nicky is probably more interesting than Lestat, if that's possible, and their romance and his subsequent fate
