Kindred was written by Octavia E. Butler. Other books she has written include Dawn, Wild Seed, and Parable of the Sower. This novel revolves around the main character Dana and her travels back in time to the antebellum south to rescue her distant ancestor Rufus. The story shows the differences between her home time period, and the slavery stricken antebellum south.

First, This book kept me interested because it never really repeated any storylines. When she went back in time for example, the characters in the south were of different age. The twists in the plot were also very interesting to follow as I was kept entertained throughout the entire book. There was also a variety of characters that kept me interested. All the characters had very different personalities that made each of them seem important to the plot of the story. Overall this book was very entertaining.

Second, there were some flaws in the book. The repetition of going back and fourth from one time to another was semi-hard to follow. You never really got a chance to get comfortable in the time period they were in. One moment in her time, then back to the south, and then back to her time. It did make it interesting, but it was hard to follow. Besides that though, this book was pretty much solid all around.

Last, Despite it's one weakness, overall this book was great to read. We had to read it in school, but it was one of the best in-school books i have ever read. It had an interesting plot, and was enjoyable to read! Any reader who enjoys reading sci-fi novels or want to learn more about the antebellum south (or slavery period) then this book is great for you.
