Alexander McCall Smith has become my Miss Manners, Mma Ramotswe my mentor, and Mma Makutse my guilty pleasure. Sure, the books have a puzzle or two to solve. But what makes them special is their attention to civility and social discourse. The reallocation of two teapots in the offices of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency is given as much care as the struggle between Mma MaKutse and her fiance's aunt over the care of said fiance or the conclusion of the case of the unknown heir. And at the center of it all is the consideration and unselfishness of that good woman, Precious Ramotswe.
