When Hannah Lindsay's blacksmith father remarries and decides to get rid of her by forcing her into a union with a dissolute and much older minister, she absconds with her dowry from Scotland to New Zealand. Fierce and determined, Hannah does not let obstacles prevent her from finding her brother on a remote sheep station, and she makes a new life for herself far from home.

The story is carried forward from the 19th century by Hannah's composer son, Nick; his daughter, Anna, a WWI nurse; her fatherless son, John, to the present.

Frances Murray writes with humor and vivid sense of place, creating memorable and appealing characters.
