I liked the characters in this book but felt like we should have known more about what caused Joaquin to desert his ideals and become a bandit. I also wish that there was a bit more. It alludes to Rose being in San Francisco but how did she get there? Did John take her on the steamboat? She and Eliza must have reunited but how did that go? Was it a tearful reunion or was it tense? Did Eliza ever find out who her real father was? How did her family react when they found out that she loved Tao? Did Baru the Bad ever find out Elias was Eliza - how did he react - was he mad for having been deceived? Etc. I just thought there were some questions left unanswered and I really liked it until the ending because it seemed to just end. At the beginning of the book, it indicated that Eliza was looking back at her life and reflecting, so it seemed to me that when the book ended, there should have been much more of her life that could have been recapped for the reader, since she was not y...more
