Julie James is a new author to me. This book is the first book that I have read by her. I haven't read the whole book, meaning, I have skipped parts of the book. I don't read same sex story lines and in this book, Mrs. James have a character - Collin, who is a homosexual. He's one of the heroine - Cameron's, best friends. She has two. Him and Amy. Don't get me wrong, I think that Collin was a good friend to Cameron and I didn't mind reading his parts with her, as long as they weren't talking about his relationship with a man.

The hero in this book is Jack Pallas. A FBI agent. He's a tortured hero-inside and out. Why did I say that? Because, he has been scarred inside and outside. I will explain what I mean. For two years, he was undercover working for a crime lord - Robert Martino and his cover was blown and in the process he had to endure some punishment. The punishment left outside scars to his body.

Now as for the inner scars, they came from the heroine - Cameron. After his cover was blown, he had to work with her. She's a U.S. Attorney. They were determined to bring down Robert, but someone blocked that action and made Cameron look like the bad guy to Jack and he didn't like her, because of what she had done and that was tell him that they weren't going to do Robert anything. He was going to walk.

The reason why the news scarred Jack inside is because he secretly had developed feelings for Cameron and she hurt him. Not only by holding him back from getting the biggest crime lord in Chicago, but also, because he could no longer see himself with Cameron. There was no way he could be with her, after this.

I want to make it clear that we don't see how Jack and Cameron felt about each other during this time, because the story takes place three years later. We do find out later on in the book that feelings were there, at least on Jack's part.

Okay, as I have said before, the previous had taken place three years earlier. Well, the story takes place three years later and Jack and Cameron are reunited, because Cameron is a witness to a murder. While her house was being renovated, she decided to go stay at a hotel in the same city. She has gotten stuck in a room next to a couple that were engaging in sexual activities that took place for hours. Cameron listened to the man and woman for hours. She's good, because I would have been called and reported them.

Cameron witnessed a murder, but she didn't see who killed the woman. Come to find out the man that was with the woman, who happened to be a call girl was the senator. Did he kill his mistress or was it someone else?

Jack and his partner Wilkins were over this case. This is how Jack and Cameron reunited. Tension was present. Jack was still mad at Cameron. Three years apart, didn't stop him from feeling the pain that she has caused him. He was transfered after Robert's case was closed, because he publicly displayed his anger towards Cameron on national TV. Now, out of all the people that could find themselves in trouble and needs his help, it's her. Well, they needed her help too.

And the race goes on to find the killer..............

I like to read about FBI heroes and Jack was a good guy, but I needed more.

I liked his partner Wilkins. He was the new guy - the rookie, but yet very likable. He was lively. I wish we had seen more of him. He's just the kind of partner that Jack needed. He kept Jack straight. He called it like he seen it and he wasn't missing any alphabets, when he tells Jack what Jack wants to deny, when it comes to Cameron.

Sometimes, people don't like honest people around them, but they are needed.

There is something about the killer that was revealed that I didn't like, but I will not say in this review.

As I have said before, Mrs. James is new to me. I'll have to check out her other books.
