** spoiler alert ** This is one of this year's middle school selections for Virginia Reader's Choice. I liked it, but wasn't wowed by it. I found myself wanting it to be more X-Men-like, but it really wasn't. Government organization (I.N.S.A.N.E.) rounds up extraordinary "specimens" (plants, animals, people) in order to make them ordinary. By whatever means possible. And if they specimen resists, it is destroyed. I kept hoping the kids that were rounded up there would end up in a more school-like place learning to use their powers, but they end up just escaping from I.N.S.A.N.E. and following their dreams. That's nice, but it would have been more fun if they became a superhero team ;)

Still, a cute book, and had I read it 20 years ago, I probably would have adored it. I'm looking forward to what the kids say during VRC book club.
