The Road of the Dead
by Kevin Brooks
by Kevin Brooks
** spoiler alert **
I had been a HUGE fan of Brooks' other work for a long time, so when I picked up this book my expectations were sky high. Maybe that's where I went wrong, but this isn't a book I'd rave about, due to one major flaw.
The concept was intriging: two brothers on a search for the their sister's murderer, one of whom has seen the exact moment she was killed through some sort of psychic ability. It is throroughly and enjoyably creepy, particularly one scene in which one of the brothers dreams of the murderer as a living corpse, a scene which actually gave me nightmares myself. The story races along, punctuated by sometimes uncomfortably violent scenes and confrontations, however, I was pressed to read on by the unfolding twists and turns and the need to discover the identity of the murderer.
Which is where my disappointment lies: after a drawn out terrifying chase, the story is never actually resolved. It's as if Brooks' has been blindly writing the story hoping he himself would find a resolution, hasn't found it, and given in, hoping that we would be satisfied with a wishy-washy "well everything turned out okay in the end" finale. The murderer's identity and his motive are never explained. It was an infuriating climax after pressing through such disturbing violence and threat. The reader deserved an explanation for having gotten so far!
All in all, I would have raved about this book, had it not been for the appalling ending. If you don't mind putting a book down without actually knowing what happened in the end, give it a try. If, like me, you like everything tied up, don't touch it!
