Having already seen the movie, I wasn't sure about reading this. I'm glad I did. Precocious Damian sorts out his emotions after the death of his mother, and finds companionship and encouragement from the saints of old. An abundance of money comes to him in an unusual way and with it, the challenges of what to do with it. It is Damian who rules the day. He, the only truly honest character in the story, determines where the remaining money goes and redeems it.
