"I read Fallen by Lauren Kate, then I read this one later that week. The similarities are striking. First, there is the unrequited love thing going where Daniel (same name and everything) loves Lucy (in fallen, it was Luce) for thousands of years. He remembers, she doesn't. That in itself is interesting. Luckily, the similarities end there, as I really did not like Fallen, if I could have given it negative stars I would have. However, I would give My Name is Memory 4. There were a few notable differences, and those made this one a much better read.

Daniel and Lucy deal with complex emotions and are plagued with self doubt, and the story takes place over a lot of years. The corresponding back story, works with the current time frame so the reader can make sense of what has happened and what is happening. I've read all of Brashares other works of fiction and liked them all (expect the the 3 Willow, terrible). This one is not life changing, but definitely a solid summer read. This one may get made into a movie as well. I keep picturing a younger Brad Pitt for Daniel. I guess I'll just have to contend myself with watching A River Runs Through It.

Just finished a reread of this one. On my second run through, I'd say that it's good but the ending really gets me. It makes it more of a 3 star than a 4 star book.

kari I also thought the similarities to Fallen were interesting, but such a better story. Great review.
