This book had many meaningful moments that showcased the courage and tenacity of the runaway slaves making a new life for themselves in Canada. The ending was beautiful, but also heartbreaking. Like other Christopher Paul Curtis books, this one is almost more of a series of short stories, but his characters are so vivid and believable that you feel like you have met real people.
