bookshelves: dystopian, ya-teen, undying-love

** spoiler alert ** (view spoiler) I was also pleasantly surprised by Condie's eloquent writing.

I do agree, though, with many of the other comments expressing a little disappointment with this book. The first half was pretty slow, though I think that was done on purpose so that Cassia's evolution would be more striking. I'm also starting to think that all these dystopian societies resemble each other: citizens kept happy and bland with few possessions and fewer choices; boxy, empty buildings and few public spaces; officials or authorities who make me think of the Storm Troopers with their all-white sameness. I'm sure someone could do an interesting paper comparing them all and what they mean for our current society, but I'd like to read a dystopian novel that really does something different. Maybe that's an oxymoron, though.

Anyway, I'll definitely be checking out the sequel to see what happened to Ky.
