WHAT MADE ME READ IT: Finished Rapture in Death Book 4
50th PAGE EVAL: this time death occurs in the world of wiccans & witches – White vs. Black Magic. We learn that both Roarke and Peabody are much more superstitious than Eve thought
PLOT: Frank, a distinguished policeman, dies, apparently with drugs in its system. His granddaughter, Alice, confides in Eve and blames a group of witches (black magic) run by Selina Cross, and Alban. Alice had been raped by Selina’s cult and she had witnessed the killing of a child. Full of paranoia Alice runs in front of a car trying to escape from spirits. Eve gets implicated when Whitney asks her to try to clean up the situation with out including Feeney. 3 more people died with an athame (sacrificial knife), they are stabbed and organs ritualistically removed. All of them belonged to Selina’s cult. Suspects are the witches, but also the wiccans. Eve arrives right when Mirium is disemboweling Louis Trevane. Everything points to a Wiccan. He is the second in command and his father was a serial killer. Finally, after Eve is abducted by the two main Witches, we discover that Alban, the second in command, is the real mastermind. He is a Con-man that grew to like the power of killing. Jamie Lingstrom (grandson of Frank and brother of Alice) actually calls for help and he helps in Eve’s rescue. He had promised to avenge his sister’s death. So he kills Alban. Eve takes the blame for the killing since he does not want to ruin the life of a promising young man
NOTES: One of the main themes is “can the apple fly really far more the tree”. Can you overcome the odds and be better than your parents or are you doomed to follow their steps? Eve is redeemed when the real killer is found. Also we see in Jamie a young Roarke, and how Eve bent the rules to give him another chance.
