Mid-century feminist accounts of women becoming entombed, pleasantly or unpleasantly, in modern mundane lives of domesticity. Quietly discomfiting. Several really stunning stories -- "The Chicken", "The Buffalo", "Imitation of the Rose" -- while others were good but somewhat unmemorable. There was something a little cumbersome about the wording in most of these, which slowed their urgency and momentum. I suspect it has to do with the translation rather than Lispector's prose itself. I will certainly be seeking her novels.
