A near great historical novel, with great characters, adventure, and historical detail. The primary character, Ballista, a Roman general of barbarian origins (an Angle), is in many ways the forerunner of Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe, perhaps even his imagined ancestor, though much less of a hand with the ladies than our dear Richard.
