I've given it 4 stars but I'm really not sure it deserves such a high rating. Perhaps my evaluation was based upon my admiration for the enormous amount of research that went into this derivative novel (and then why no acknowledgements?).

Everything and everyone who played even the slightest role during the Victorian/Edwardian era was thrown into the mix, with an accompanying aside on how these events, ideas or characters fit together. Really!

My tendency is to withdraw when an author spends so much time instructing or lecturing the reader, and in my opinion, Byatt steps over that line many times in this voluminous multi-threaded tale.

Arukiyomi my edition had two pages of acknowledgments at the end. I agree with your comment on your rating though.
