The Austins are trying to settle into their new life in New York City. The mystery of a recent attack which left their young friend blind lingers in the background, but with each one immersed in their own things the Austins don’t notice that something even more sinister is going on in their neighbourhood – and it’s centred around them.
Book three of L’Engle’s Austin Family Chronicles unveils a frightening scientific scenario. Dr Austin is developing a laser “micro-ray” which could make non-invasive brain surgery possible. But others are keen to experiment with it on the brain’s pleasure centre, using it to manipulate people’s feelings, and through them, their actions.
Though written in 1968, (some of the language has dated a little), L’Engle’s novel draws a family adventure into important ethical debates which are now more relevant than ever. Highly recommended.
