The Awakening (The Vampire Diaries, #1)
by L.J. Smith
by L.J. Smith
After reading the vampire trilogy by Stephenie Meyer, I thought I would continue my bloodthirsty fiction rampage with this older teenage vampire trilogy. Lo and behold, it's almost the same story! Oh, Stephenie Meyer, now I know how you cranked out those three fat (should have been heavily edited) books in such a short span of time! For shame!

LOL, I had the exact same thought when reading this book. So much for originality, Miss Meyer!

I love your "for shame!" Regardless of the similarities, I'm going ahead and loving them both. It's the least I can do.
Well, there was a big case against Meyer for stealing the idea, and many parts of the story, from L.J. Smith. Her books were temporarily pulled from the Borders where I lived until she resolved the lawsuit.
I just finished the first Vampire Diaries book and had the exact same thought! It's the exact same story! There's even a bunch of referenced to "Twilight," (all caps) which struck me as particularly egregious. In the interviews with Meyers I've read, she's claimed to not have read other vampire novels because she believed that they would distract her from her totally original and creative ideas. As if her story just sprang forth, with no inspirations or references! I had no idea there had been a lawsuit over this...I should check that out!
Yeah, she resolved it pretty fast as far as what I was told at Borders and how quickly her books came back to the shelves. Considering how old "The Vampire Diaries" is compared to her "modern interpretation," it's highly unlikely that she DIDN'T read these books. She probably just thought it would never get noticed. Maybe she never thought her books would gain so much popularity that the original author would notice. Who knows? I heard the worst plagiarizing happens with Book 1 of the series.
Thanks for the info Adrianna. I'm taking a legal research class right now, so I'll use my new skills to check out the lawsuit against Meyer.
Lets be honest and all get off our soap boxes for a minute... Almost every single vampire young adult book is based on the same premise, with only a few things changing: i.e. the characters and where they are set....Let's be honest, when it comes to making a romantic story for teenagers to read that is made about humans and vampires, is there really much to play around with?

I guess we can always dream of originality despite it being so difficult to come by these days.
Yes, true and good points, however there were some things that were so close to full on plagiarism it was scary. I can't tell you how many times I was reading this and yelled out "DUDE! This is Twilight!!"
I haven't read the vampire trilogy by stephanie meyer but, I'm going to have to now that you said what you've said. Thanx for the heads up
I personally didn't notice a similarity besides the usual basic elements of vampire, young adult, and love triangles. But those things are everywhere. And I thought this book was pretty bad but actually found the Twilight series entertaining though no great work of literature. Also Twilight was originally titled "Forks" by Meyers but obviously not a great title, it was vetoed by publisher. So I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Also, Meyers won the lawsuit. I have many times noticed similar elements in a variety of books and movies. Obviously, writers have influences and even in the case of spontaneous ideas, people do have similar ideas.
OMG, I thought the exact same thing while I was reading. I told my mother and we were trying to figure out how she didn't get sued on plagiarizer. An Meyer, "cranked out those three fat books," so quikely because she had already written those three before 2004. Considering she had breaking dawn already copyrighted in by then. Breaking dawn was originally called Forever Dawn. Your still hilarious though!!!!!
